Graham Rawle

Graham Rawle, Wizard of Oz, 2008.

I love Graham Rawles take on the wizard of oz it has reflected on my work alot, I like that he makes big collections of found objects which he cleverly puts together. I think it is interesting that most of he images are make indeivualy and photographed to be then put on to photoshop were he can put them in the perfect place.

Today I used Graham approch to making images by creating my own with Photoshop layering different images on top of a chosen background. I really like how this image has turn out and I will do more like this.

Toto

Today I started to make a life size Toto out of fabrics this could them be put on a push along frame Graham Rawle used this for his dog I think it is an intresting how Graham has approched wizard of oz how he looks at L.Frank Baum's words, the book says he is a small black dog but it dosnt say that he is a push along toy so you can be very playful and do what ever you like.

Collage

As well as making the charaters I have been looking at collage I have used photoshop to layer up images and to play around with colour.
Using Photosop has been great as I have been able to change things move images around and see what works best I am also able to draw on top of images.

I was inspired by Eduardo Recife, he uses vintage magazine for his images, he paints and draws on top of them.

Eduardo Recife, Where did hope go, 2005.

Eduardo Recife is an artist/illustrator, graphic designer, and typographer from Brazil. He is the man behind Misprinted Type, which is a well known website fpr focusing on his personal collages and drawings and his world wide famous typefaces.

he uses a form of a simple text, collage, drawing or a typeface but he also works with pencil, paint, computer, photography, and collages. Recife’s illustrations have a characteristic vintage feel and an old-era style.

The Wizard of Oz

For this collaborative project me, Elaine and Jasmine have decided to look at the wizard of oz for the theme, we have been working towards making our own version of oz which we could animate. we decided that we should each had a few senses and characters to make. I chose to make the lion, winged monkey and Toto, for my previous projects I have made animals out of fabrics, I am going to continue working with fabrics but i will try using different fabrics to see what works best.

This was my first attempt at making a lion this lion was too small and it need wire in its legs to help it stand up.

I tried out a couple of different manes be for I decided to give the lion the big dark brown mane I also tried out fur and yarn.

The finished lion

TOTO

Before making Toto i saw a Scotty dog and I loved the shape of them and I also thought he would be perfect for Toto I like the frayed material it gives him a sense of been furry.

I also tried out a different shape of a dog but I much preferred the Scotty dog as it is a more prominent shape.

The Toto in the book is a black little dog, but I also tryed out different colours such as this red Toto but I still used the found materials, I experimented with different coloured stich on to the different fabrics, I like red thred on to the black Toto.

Vist to Manchester

Manchester Museum

I am looking at animals for my project so I decided that I need to go see them up close rather than just off pictures so I went to the Manchester Museum to look and draw the animals.

I loved this scenario It was different to the other displays it actually showed the fox in scenario were we would actually see it rather than in its natural environment.

I really like looking at the skeletons and how animals body’s work and move these also help me look at the animals in a completely different way, it is a different way of drawing animals and approach to making animals.

The Artist's Book Fair

Today I went to the 13th international contemporary book fair in Leeds this presented unique and multiple book works by artist, imprints and publishers from around the world. Going to the book fair was a new experience for me as i have never been to anything like this before, it was a great way to find new references and been able to buy the books was really good. There was only one problem with this book fair was that it was really crowed and you didn’t get much time to look at the stalls before been pushed out of the way.

here are some artists from the book fair

we have breaks..

Rachel Goodyear talk

Rachel Goodyear does delicate pencil and watercolour drawings on paper she uses a lot of big pieces of paper but only make small drawings she leaves white space to let your imagination fill the rest of the space and to fill in the scenery, her drawings always tend to have a narrative, they are like fairytales, there is a relationship between the characters to engage in the work. she strips the characters from there background to engage the viewer to make then take a closer look. For her preparation she watches animal documentaries to relate them to human characteristics she also looks at mythology. Rachel uses her own photographs to get the position of the human figure she also gets other people to take photos of herself so that she can draw them she also uses magazines and images from them. This is a great way of getting her human figure to be in the exact position that she wants it to be she can also set lighting so she gets shadows in the right places.

Rachel Goodyear, Girl and Dog, 2008

Rachel Goodyear, Girl with Jellyfish, 2008

In some of her drawings she puts her self in vulnerable positions this relates to domesticity in the piece Girl and Dog- there is a unknowing scene of what’s happening is this pleasure or pain is the dog trying to get attention, there is no emotion she tends to hide faces loneliness. The piece Girl with Jellyfish there is many questions about this piece is she enjoying this is she punishing her self is it playful curiosity or just an absurd reality. She makes her work personal which you can relate to. I like the dark side to these images there is a sense of unknowing what is really happening here and were is she I like that I can play with my imagination and find the story out for myself.

Rachel Goodyear, Rat-King, 2009

Rat king she takes this drawing off the white paper and used card to laser cut it ending up with very detailed doily like rats tails all joined together this seems grotesque but it is attracting with repulsion. I really enjoyed Rachel’s talk it was interesting to know what things inspired her and how she worked. I liked that people come to her with objects I thought that was really nice and is a great idea for a little project that might be interesting for me to do. The small delicate drawings inspired me to draw on a smaller scale leaving more white space to fill with my own imagination, here are some of my pencil drawings inspired by Rachel.

I plan to do more drawings like this but I will get them out of my sketchbook, on to either A1 or A2 paper this will give them allot more white space for more imagination, this will allow there to be other objects maybe even a car in one corner and dead pheasant in the other.

Statment of intent

I intent to use this blog as a diary to talk about things that interest me my process thought out my studio work and what has influenced me this will be my initial ideas, sketches, annotations and lecture notes, responses to my research and experiments things have and gone wrong and how I resolved them. I will start by gathering artist who interest me and those that reflect my work i will look at interviews and reviews also visit galleries to make notes of pieces of work that appeal to me.
