exhibition - Myths and Monsters

This exhibition was fun for kids the creatures they had on display moved which scared children abit but there was also a dressing up corner so that would take there mind off the scary dragon. I thought that this exhibition would of been bigger since there are so many myths and monster I was a but disappointed at the amount there, but still and interesting way of finding out information.

Sara Fanelli, A Dogs Life,1998

In her work she experiments with text and new techniques, such as collage, she creates her own personal stlye. She usually works on coloured backgrounds, but in much more subtle colours, such as ochre, misty blue or orangey red, often using pieces of paper torn from exercise books, graph paper and wallpaper, frequently stained or marked in some way. On these backgrounds she sticks fragments cut from photographs – eyes are a common motif, as are pictures of herself as a child – pieces of fabric, details seemingly randomly cut from prints of old masters, music and snippets of newsprint, often mixing print in several languages including English, Italian, French and even Chinese.

She plays with different typefaces, superimposing pieces of print on top of her illustrations, or using them as part of a drawing – the body of a butterfly, for example. The use of historical typeface, such as pieces giving price tags in old pounds, shillings and pennies, give an old-fashioned look to the work and hint of influences from Duchamp and other Dadaists. She often draws or prints in black ink on top of these collages, using doodle-like scribbles, which pull the focus of the work back from the adult world to the realms of childhood.

These are two of my own collages I have made Toto and the cowardly lion I have used grey grass for toto and used a colletion of different furs for the lion using human eyes that have  been used in Sara Fanelli's work.

Graham Rawle

Graham Rawle, Wizard of Oz, 2008.

I love Graham Rawles take on the wizard of oz it has reflected on my work alot, I like that he makes big collections of found objects which he cleverly puts together. I think it is interesting that most of he images are make indeivualy and photographed to be then put on to photoshop were he can put them in the perfect place.

Today I used Graham approch to making images by creating my own with Photoshop layering different images on top of a chosen background. I really like how this image has turn out and I will do more like this.

Toto

Today I started to make a life size Toto out of fabrics this could them be put on a push along frame Graham Rawle used this for his dog I think it is an intresting how Graham has approched wizard of oz how he looks at L.Frank Baum's words, the book says he is a small black dog but it dosnt say that he is a push along toy so you can be very playful and do what ever you like.

Collage

As well as making the charaters I have been looking at collage I have used photoshop to layer up images and to play around with colour.

Using Photosop has been great as I have been able to change things move images around and see what works best I am also able to draw on top of images.

I was inspired by Eduardo Recife, he uses vintage magazine for his images, he paints and draws on top of them.

Eduardo Recife, Where did hope go, 2005.




Eduardo Recife is an artist/illustrator, graphic designer, and typographer from Brazil. He is the man behind Misprinted Type, which is a well known website fpr focusing on his personal collages and drawings and his world wide famous typefaces.

he uses a form of a simple text, collage, drawing or a typeface but he also works with pencil, paint, computer, photography, and collages. Recife’s illustrations have a characteristic vintage feel and an old-era style.

The Wizard of Oz

For this collaborative project me, Elaine and Jasmine have decided to look at the wizard of oz for the theme, we have been working towards making our own version of oz which we could animate. we decided that we should each had a few senses and characters to make. I chose to make the lion, winged monkey and Toto, for my previous projects I have made animals out of fabrics, I am going to continue working with fabrics but i will try using different fabrics to see what works best.

This was my first attempt at making a lion this lion was too small and it need wire in its legs to help it stand up.

I tried out a couple of different manes be for I decided to give the lion the big dark brown mane I also tried out fur and yarn.

TOTO

Before making Toto i saw a Scotty dog and I loved the shape of them and I also thought he would be perfect for Toto I like the frayed material it gives him a sense of been furry.

I also tried out a different shape of a dog but I much preferred the Scotty dog as it is a more prominent shape.

The Toto in the book is a black little dog, but I also tryed out different colours such as this red Toto but I still used the found materials, I experimented with different coloured stich on to the different fabrics, I like red thred on to the black Toto.
